SJP’s corduroys

If you’re looking for a cozier alternative to denim, try corduroy. I love my J Brand black skinnies, as well as the haze-colored-flared-style SJP is wearing above (in Juicy Couture, sadly no longer available). Her floppy hat is right on trend, I have a similar one by Hat Attack and I covet it’s black and grey sibling. Parker’s gorgeous leopard scarf is YSL, the look can be found more affordably by Tory Burch. Her rolled-up flares, brown ankle boots, purple suede hobo, and white-tank with black bra peaking through all give her that effortlessly chic SJP-style we’ve grown to LOVE.

Sailor Girls… Get Noticed

SJP and Kate are nautical visions of summer in Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen’s ribbed sailor dress. Sarah Jessica wore the navy style in Hollywood, accented with a red croc clutch and hot-red bowed peep toes. Kate wore the classic white version with black heels in Prince Edward Island… her new husband playfully thanked P.E.I for naming the island after him. Awe… And speaking of the Prince. What’s not to love about Kate in a white Sarah Burton dress? Memories

This gorgeous dress isn’t available, but you can still skirt your sweater this month and into the fall in beige, navy, off-white, or black. Thicker knits flatter… And as always, SPANX are your friends.

SPANX very much

Few women haven’t heard of SPANX. If you haven’t until now… you’re welcome.

What you wear UNDER your clothes, is just as important as what everyone can see. So use the secret weapon of stylists everywhere (Rachel Zoe herself swore by SPANX maternity shapewear during her recent pregnancy) and say goodbye to unwanted bulges, back-fat, double (and triple!) bum. There’s absolutely no shame in a little help sans-knife. The tiniest of celebrities (Kelly Ripa, and Sarah Jessica Parker) swear by SPANX to snug their assets, whereas curvacious stars like Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian use the genius-spandex formula to hug their curves. The billion-dollar brand is such a success (they were one of Oprah’s favorite things in 2000… thanks O!) you can now find a wide range of styles and colors for EVERY outfit and ANY occasion. Made for REAL women!

Marilyn Monroe was famously quoted saying, “I don’t know who invented high heels, but all women owe him a lot.” Pretty sure the iconic sex symbol and her infamous curves would have been equally spankful to SPANX founder and creator Sara Blakely. Two words: Shear. Genius.

reconsider red denim

My first memory of colored denim stems back to grade 7 when I first saw the girls in my gymnastics class (who were in grade 8, and therefore much cooler than me) wearing Le Château purple and hunter green jeans. I just had to have them. Immediately. For better or for worse, my mom indulged my incessant retail obsessions from a young age and we were soon after purchasing several pairs from the mall. A good 15… years later, I’m finding myself drawn to red skinny jeans and crops. When I first saw Sarah Jessica Parker wearing them last spring my heart skipped a beat. While I can’t say I wholeheartedly support her choice to pair it with her “Halston Heritage Tie Dye Sac Bag” and pink T (too much for almost anyone other than her), I’m a big fan of a hot red pant with white, black (be careful of the red riding hood effect), grays and creams.

Even this spring’s love for all-pants-flared can be successfully worn in a softer crimson hue.

blazer’s bests

Photos: Jennifer Garner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Charlize Theron: Splash News

There are three blazers every woman needs in her closet, the school boy (Jennifer’s wearing the perfect example of navy with gold buttons above), a stark or off-white (SJP rocks a boyfriend style off-white above), and a black boyfriend (à la Charlize). This wardrobe staples will take you from day to night, wherever you’re going – whoever you’re seeing – whatever you’re doing. Jackets (blazers) create structure and with the right fit and tailoring, they flatter EVERY figure.

My suggestion for a school boy is charcoal gray or navy with gold buttons. My favorite is J.Crew’s shown below, I own this and wear it OFTEN. Never without a complement! It should be fitted, and have a bit of a crop to it (stopping above the waist).  The style works worn open or closed.

For a stark or off-white (worn all-year) choose either a longer boyfriend-style like SJP, or something fitted and cropped. A tuxedo blazer is also great in white. While I love SJP’s look above, my stark white blazer is fitted and cropped-esque.  I love it over black skinnies and a long tank.

Black boyfriend blazers came onto the scene with a vengeance. Worn correctly they can be a classic staple – not a passing trend. Charlize opts for white silk cuffs shown off (I’m currently coveting Theory’s heather-gray bf blazer with white and black polka dot cuffs… but I digress). We often see pinstriped cuffs (white with black stripes), while they might be a bit overdone, it can work wonders to adding personal flare to basic black. Black-on-black (below) is safely timeless. Never one to discriminate, you can also give a “girlfriend” blazer a go – with a more feminine fit it’s great in black or navy. Whoever your partner, just give your sleeves two-three rolls and go!

How to:

- Never wear a double-breasted blazer open, the extra material will flat and add volume to your tummy and waist. I’ve yet to meet a woman who needs or wants that…

- Always dress in thirds, you want your blazer to hit at top third of your body, or after the top two-thirds, for the most flattering fit – halving yourself truncates your height and gives the optical illusion that objects appear wider than they are… (and when it comes close to ending in the middle of your body, keep it open like Jen and Charlize). Thank you Tim Gunn!

- Tailor, tailor, TAILOR. I’ve yet to buy and/or wear a blazer that I haven’t had tailored in some way, shape or form. Whether it cost $30, or $3,000 – it will be worth EVERY penny to accentuate your best figure features. This is especially important with boxy fits like a boyfriend-style.

Enjoy!!

SJP school run

SJP is a style phenomenon. As much as I love her style on the big (and small) screen and red carpet – this icon knows how to effortlessly rock her signature style in her daily life too. Every day is a 10!!

Parker keeps things consistent, often opting for UGGs (her go-tos are gray and sand). SJP also loves her Gerard Darel tukes (shown above in gray), Ray-ban oversized plastic shield sunglasses, and black down puffy vest. In the second pic, she’s wearing a Halston Heritage sequin tote (in gold, the same bag is shown in black in pic #3). I love her undone bed head hair, grey cuffed skinny cords and brown suede slouch cow-girl boots. Next, Sarah Jessica gets comfy in a Phillip Lim 3.1 gray cable knit sweater coat, purple cords, and metallic ballerina flats. And last, but not least… she pairs her down vest with cut-off denim pedal pushers, gray suede flats, a gray top and gold tote. This last look appears the most effortless, and for that reason it’s tied for my favorite with #2.

Sarah knows her personal style, she owns it and she rocks it. Every time.

Sarah Jessica Parker can do no wrong in my books… while some fashionistas criticize her casual UGG-loving day-wear as she walks seven year-old son James Wilkie to-and-from school in New York’s East Village, I love that she doesn’t feel the need to wear head-to-toe couture everyday (despite being named Halston Heritage’s Creative Director in January 2010). Even Victoria Beckham’s seen wearing the odd sweat pants and boyfriend jeans, but when these girls dress up: WOW.

Polka-dot hosiery are a popular look on the runway, celebrities and trend-setters across the globe. An instant update to your office skirt suit, or evening cocktail dress (hello Holidays…) – they’re a subtle detail that won’t go unnoticed. They’re tasteful and classy, think of them as the new fishnet.

Whether you opt for a mini SJP-style, short shorts à la Gwyneth,  or a longer pencil-skirt style – polk-it-up.

Hollywood’s precious pumpkins

Heidi, Sarah, Halle, Christina and Jessica get ready in style for this weekend’s Halloween festivities.

Happy Halloween Eve Eve!! October flew by… as we’re reminded by Hollywood’s minis (and famous parents) getting ready to finish the month with a festive BANG (or should I say BOO?).

The Beverly Hill’s pumpkin patch has been garnering some serious star power this month with Heidi Klum and two of her little ones; Halle Berry and Nahla Aubry; Christina Aguilera and Max Bratman; Jessica Alba, Honor and Cash Warren. I can only imagine their impending costumes… j’adorable.

Sarah Jessica’s brown-stone is ready and decorated in East-Village-NYC style for this weekend’s festivities. I’m sure James Wilkie and twins Marion Loretta Elwell and Tabitha Hodge Broderick are ready to get their trick-or-treat on… Awe. Whatever city you’re in this Sunday, whether you’re dressing up, carving pumpkins, enjoying treats – or tricks; I hope you do it in GOURDgeous style.
