If you haven’t heard of CJ by Cookie Johnson, these pants will change the lines of your legs. The wife of Magic Johnson, designer “Cookie” has quickly become a fashion force in denim – offering the best fitting, premium denim fit for women with real bodies. The styles don’t stop at just denim – there are cords, twill, and cotton pants that flatter women with shape. Whether you’re pear shaped, bottom heavy – whatever curves you have, CJ’s will hug, snug and FLATTER. And unlike some other mature and flattering denim lines, CJ’s have successfully incorporated current denim trends into their collection. From colored denim, to animal print, waxed-coated, boyfriend, skinny cargo, twill and more.. including classic styles like white, boot-cut, straight-leg, and black. Oprah’s a fan and swears they’re as comfortable as yoga pants or sweats (I wear them every time I fly). The not-so-secret weapons are stretch and a silk waistband. The vanity sizing (24=4 25=4-6, 26=6, 27=6-8, 28=8-10, 29=8-10, 30=10, 31=10-12, 32=12), plus size availability (34=14, 36=16, 38=18) and real models are added bonuses. Thanks to Cookie for bringing some magic to denim… Enjoy!!
< $125 – UGG Shearling Glove: comes in brown, camel and black leather – a cozy classic.
< $200 – A plaid scarf: not too-fashion-forward, but a soft statement that keeps him looking pulled together. This look works for the office and weekends.
< $500 – Alden® for J.Crew suede longwing bluchers: if he doesn’t know what shoes to wear with jeans on casual Friday or nights out, these are them! They also work with dress pants and a suit. They aren’t to be missed in black or dark brown leather either (a shoe in for a more conservative dresser – for the daring, check out the high tops).
Blush Blazers are a go-to for spring and summer that can be worn right into fall… their neutral palette goes with everything!! Without competing to be the focus of your outfit, this blazer keeps you cool from day to night – battling over-air-conditioning and breezy nights. Worn over a tank or blouse with white skinny jeans and nude patent round-toe pumps, you’ve got your summer uniform. Softer and more feminine than beige (although I love Gwyneth’s look too), you can opt for an oversized boyfriend or more fitted style. Even men (ahem Justin Bieber…) are BLUSHING.
What are Jen-An’s travel must-haves? Looks like: jeans, a leather jacket and aviator sunglasses. Done!
On this side of the pond, at LAX, Jen wore flared jeans, a gray sweater, white tee, black round-toe boots, aviators and layered pendants. Although nothing outshines her beautiful blonde locks.
Pastels are just some of the colors we’re seeing in spring – summer 2011, and I like it! Cameron Diaz shows her style’s softer side in a muted color palette of white, beige, coral (pink, blush, rose?), and tan. Call it what you will, her Rag and Bone “coral” skinny jeans are the perfect pairing for her Stella McCartney beige wool blazer (a great example of wool working year-round). The blazer’s relaxed boyfriend style gives this ultra-sweet and feminine look some sexy spice (rolled sleeves and popped collars are a do when you’re sans boardroom). Her white basic t almost covers a black bra. The finishing touches? Tan leather ankle cuff heels and Bottega Veneta woven bag…

There are three blazers every woman needs in her closet, the school boy (Jennifer’s wearing the perfect example of navy with gold buttons above), a stark or off-white (SJP rocks a boyfriend style off-white above), and a black boyfriend (à la Charlize). This wardrobe staples will take you from day to night, wherever you’re going – whoever you’re seeing – whatever you’re doing. Jackets (blazers) create structure and with the right fit and tailoring, they flatter EVERY figure.
My suggestion for a school boy is charcoal gray or navy with gold buttons. My favorite is J.Crew’s shown below, I own this and wear it OFTEN. Never without a complement! It should be fitted, and have a bit of a crop to it (stopping above the waist). The style works worn open or closed.
For a stark or off-white (worn all-year) choose either a longer boyfriend-style like SJP, or something fitted and cropped. A tuxedo blazer is also great in white. While I love SJP’s look above, my stark white blazer is fitted and cropped-esque. I love it over black skinnies and a long tank.
Black boyfriend blazers came onto the scene with a vengeance. Worn correctly they can be a classic staple – not a passing trend. Charlize opts for white silk cuffs shown off (I’m currently coveting Theory’s heather-gray bf blazer with white and black polka dot cuffs… but I digress). We often see pinstriped cuffs (white with black stripes), while they might be a bit overdone, it can work wonders to adding personal flare to basic black. Black-on-black (below) is safely timeless. Never one to discriminate, you can also give a “girlfriend” blazer a go – with a more feminine fit it’s great in black or navy. Whoever your partner, just give your sleeves two-three rolls and go!

How to:
- Never wear a double-breasted blazer open, the extra material will flat and add volume to your tummy and waist. I’ve yet to meet a woman who needs or wants that…
- Always dress in thirds, you want your blazer to hit at top third of your body, or after the top two-thirds, for the most flattering fit – halving yourself truncates your height and gives the optical illusion that objects appear wider than they are… (and when it comes close to ending in the middle of your body, keep it open like Jen and Charlize). Thank you Tim Gunn!
- Tailor, tailor, TAILOR. I’ve yet to buy and/or wear a blazer that I haven’t had tailored in some way, shape or form. Whether it cost $30, or $3,000 – it will be worth EVERY penny to accentuate your best figure features. This is especially important with boxy fits like a boyfriend-style.
Sienna Miller mastered Parisian style in France this fall at the 21st Dinard British Film Festival pairing her Kate Spade Street Car Darya faux Cheetah bag with a nautical striped top, pleated denim, and snakeskin heels. My love for leopard is nothing new, but I have to give Sienna due props for her unexpected pairings. She also successfully dons two animal prints in the same outfit, without being matchy-matchy, tacky or trashy. The loose cropped black sweater perfects the look.
Sienna’s successful pleats also deserve acknowledgment. When we think of pleated denim, mom jeans come to mind but SM’s kept her look sexy with rolled oversized-bf-style trousers. The finishing touch? Snakeskin heels. This look could easily falter to transgender with flats (although a skinner style is cute with boots – pleated skinnies… who knew??). With her dark coke bottle glasses, Sienna’s nothing but stellar. Well done girl, whatever you wear in 2011; we’ll be watching.
The old adage never wear white after Labor Day is long gone, and with good riddance. White is great go-to color, all-year. Although it admittedly pops against a tan and darker complexion, it can still be luscious against pale skin that’s untouched by the sun. Whether you keep it to one item like a blazer, or rock it head-to-toe (a wool suit skirt perhaps?) – as long as you keep the material seasonally appropriate (i.e. don’t wear linen in the winter months of the East Coast) it works.
AnneLynne and Gwyn opted for longer boyfriend cuts, while Cameron’s has a shrunken feel. Regardless of where you live, Cameron’s look is nothing-but-perfection for cooler months with a loose black top underneath and her dark gray scarf. AnnaLynne’s blazer over her blush strapless cocktail dress is another perfect 10. And Gwyneth’s on-trend light-wash skinnies and white tee, perfectly pulled together with her white bf hits the mark. If you’re looking for one piece to update your signature style, taking you from day to night, the office to a night out - the white blazer is it.
