You might know Bethenny from “The Apprentice: Martha Stewart”, “The Real Housewives of New York” seasons 1, 2 or 3; her New York Times Best Selling book “Naturally Thin” (or “The Skinnygirl Dish”); her Bravo Reality TV shows “Bethenny Getting Married?” or “Bethenny Ever After”; or her famous Skinny Girl Margaritas. Or, there’s still a chance you might not know her at all. Nonetheless, Bethenny Frankel is a Reality TV Mogul and business woman (she recently sold the SkinnyGirl brand to Fortune Brands’ Beam Global) to be reckoned with. So it’s no surprise that her new book has great life lessons for everyone. Bethenny shares her experiences and wisdom in her very-real and authentic (no B.S.) voice. Because not everything needs to be learned the hard way.

Coming from a troubled childhood, jumping from man to man, dealing with money and eating issues – all to find the love of her life at age 38 – Jason Hoppy. Bethenny struggled with her career, body, self-esteem and love-life for most of her 20s and 30s, only to really find her stride (and then some) before recently turning 40. I just finished the book. It’s motivational, inspirational, refreshing and real. Mrs. B.F. is sans B.S.

Bill Cunningham is the original Street Style blogger. At 82 years old, this man is a legend in the fashion world for good reason. He spends his days riding around New York City on a bike (he’s on his 29th, the first 28 stolen), and nights at the most prestigious Manhattan evening events (not that this impresses him, he’ll never read a guest list or accept even water when he’s working – he’s there for the best causes and photographs whoever he wants). Nothing influences his creative eye.
Never without his camera, Bill bikes/walks and runs to capture emerging fashion trends that women and men are wearing. His weekly spreads in the New York Times Style section “On the Street” and “Evening Hours” are must-read columns for fashion-lovers everywhere. Always focusing on an emerging theme he’s noticed – Bill picks up on things before the fashion magazine and trend-forecasters leading the industry. Inevitably, in a matter or weeks or months, whatever he’s photographed is the next trend. He considers fashion to have three pillars: 1) the runway; 2) the street (what people are actually wearing); 3) evening (the fun of dressing up to be seen).
While the movie is a bit dark, Bill’s eccentric and shy to say the least – he admits to never having a romantic relationship in his life – it’s filled with inspiration for photographer, bloggers, writers, and fashion men and women everywhere. Clips of New York and Paris never disappoint, and despite leaving me torn between feeling sorry for Bill, and wanting to adopt him as my grandfather… I highly recommend seeing it for yourself. When the DVD is available, I’ll be buying it to add to my collection of iconic fashion movies: “The September Issue” and “Valentino The Last Emperor”.

Bill, it’s nice to know you’ve got us covered. You’re an inspiration. And well done Richard press!

in Antarctica??!

I’m about to find out. Today marks the beginning of a trip that will conquer a lifelong dream to travel to all seven continents (before age 30 – that criteria was altered last January to include my 30th year when I learned these somewhat intensive expeditions are booked a year in advance and only run from the end of December until early March each year; noted). Another bucket list goal was to get to 30 countries before 30 (it only counts if I’ve actually left the airport). I’m applying the extension here too, Argentina and Chile are numbers 27 and 28 leaving me with two more 2011 adventures. I’m excited to visit Santiago on my way South and Buenos Aires on my way home.
So what are they wearing in Antarctica? I’ll be wearing a lot of LAYERS, including my Hunter Wellies with leopard fleece socks, gray Burberry scarf, North Face quilted puffy baumer, and LA Dodgers hat to hideaway and close my eyes on long flights. I’ll save everyone the pictures of the rest of my less glamorous “gear”, but I will say this is probably my most interesting packing experience ever (although it’s not my first trip requiring enough disposable hand and feet warmers to brave each day’s subarctic temperatures… apparently Toronto in December isn’t cold enough for me). It’s also really fun to say “Antarctica” in any normal sentence, as in: “Sure, after Antarctica?”, “I’ll call you after Antarctica” or “Let’s do it when I’m back from Antarctica.” It never gets old. I’m a lucky girl.
