red dresses are red-HOT, Olivia Palmero rocks red Marchesa and Diane Kruger, Prabal Gurung.

We’re seeing a lot of red on celebrities this fall, and ornately-detailed dresses are no exception. Olivia wore red Marchesa to their Spring 2011 New York Fashion Week show. Her gray suede booties are also a popular look. The soft gray suede is cute, but be careful wearing more than one suede piece per outfit (her red petal sleeved shift’s also suede). Minimal accessories save the look.
Diane also stepped out red-HOT last month in Prabal Gurung’s Red Crepe Caplet Dress, with a gorgeous embellished collar and fitted sheath body. Her gray and black leather Oxford-style lace up booties are a bit aggressive with shiny leather and two-tone, compared to Olivia’s subtle one-hue suede… less is more when pairing shoes with popping poppy-red. Go for dark gray, black or flattering nude. You don’t want to become a fashion victim, so play it safe with only one avant-garde trend per outfit (ie, Olivia and Diane’s red-winged sleeves OR lace up booties – not both). A classic shoe like a round-toe pump will keep the focus on your sizzling statement dress.

“When in doubt, wear red.” – Bill Blass
“Why make everything black, black black? Fashion should be fun and put a woman in the spotlight with a little bit of danger, you know?”

I always struggle with my make-up when wearing a red dress. What to do, what to do? Suggestions??!!
Great question! Keep your makeup subtle, a soft pink lip gloss, light eyes with dark mascara. Stay away from red-toned blush, instead opting for a soft pink offset with bronzer to give yourself a natural glow (without rosy cheeks that match your dress). And last but NOT least, avoid red nail polish. This is the perfect time for a daring dark (black, navy, eggplant, purple), a dashing nude (like Essie’s “Fed Up”), or a classy taupe (OPI “You don’t know Jacques)… avoiding matchy matchy is most important when it comes to your outfit and makeup. And choose a black or basic nude, gray, navy or even white bag – the only thing that should be red on you… is your dress!
Great make up suggestions! How do you know which red is best for your skin tone? Help!
If you have olive skin go for a deeper red, think blue or brown-red, almost burgundy. With pink skin, avoid orange-reds and stick to more ashy-tones. Pale skin works well with a bright-hot-orange-red like Olivia’s and Diane’s… and with yellow skin, avoid gold and orange-red, go deep and play up hints of pink.
It really is a color that works for everyone – it’s all about finding the right hue. When you find it, you’ll know, and if you’re not sure – always ask for a second (and sometimes third) opinion. And of course, you can always send in a pic to WATW!!
Awesome looks…. now I’m wondering how to incorporate this with an office look. Can you suggest ways to incorporate a bit of red into the professional work wardrobe?
Of course! A red statement suit is hard to pull off, even for super model Heidi Klum in $$$lux designer Robert Rodriguez: http://bit.ly/cRaUOA on the finale of Project Runway… falling quite short of a 10.
I standby one red piece per outfit, whether it’s a black suit with a red blouse (or cami) underneath, the red soles of Christan Louboutins (careful, many of CL’s beloved heels are not corporate-office-height appropriate) with all black elsewhere, or all black with a red (preferably quilted) bag. If you don’t need to wear a suit, or possibly have more relaxed Fridays – a red shift dress is great with black tights and black round toe pumps. To dress it up, keep a black blazer close by. if it’s sleeveless, you can also wear a black crew neck or turtleneck underneath to keep bare skin to a minimum (this is why black tights are required, no bare legs regardless of the temperature!)
And be careful, while you never want a work dress to be tight – it should be fitted. If it’s too loose, or there’s too much fabric, you can quickly take a wrong turn to Red Riding Hood…
Here are three office appropriate red dresses I love:

$$ chic: http://bit.ly/cryBDO

And last but not least, an easy way for wearing red in the office is a red-HOT coat… http://bit.ly/cB9r3h
Gold hardware truly pops against red fabric – you’ll turn heads all the way in, and out!!
I love adding punches of red to an outfit! Red bags are my favorite!!!
loooove – totally!!
